Pregnancy Cravings: Why They Happen and What Your Body Is Telling You

Craving pickles at midnight? Suddenly can't stand your favorite foods? Pregnancy can bring some surprising changes to your appetite and taste buds. Let's explore why pregnancy cravings happen, what they really mean, and when to pay closer attention to what your body is asking for.

Let's Talk Pregnancy Cravings, Mama!

One day, you're enjoying your usual meals, and the next, you're standing in front of the fridge wondering why nothing sounds good except that one very specific food you can't stop thinking about.

After having four babies of my own and spending years as a labor and delivery nurse, I've heard some pretty interesting pregnancy cravings. From the classic pickles and ice cream to combinations you wouldn't normally think to put together, pregnancy can certainly keep things interesting!

But as unusual as some of these cravings might seem, they're a common experience for many expecting moms. And while we don't have all the answers, there are a few things we know about why your appetite and food preferences can change during pregnancy.

Why Do Pregnancy Cravings Happen?

Pregnancy brings plenty of changes to your body, and your appetite is no exception.

Hormonal changes may influence your sense of taste and smell, although researchers are still learning exactly why pregnancy cravings happen.

You might suddenly love a food you've never cared for or find that something you used to enjoy doesn't sound appealing anymore. Sometimes, it's not even the food itself you're craving. It might be a particular flavor, texture, or temperature.

Maybe something cold and refreshing sounds especially good, or you're suddenly all about salty, crunchy snacks.

There's no single explanation for why these preferences develop, but one question that often comes up is whether cravings are your body's way of telling you it needs something.

Do Pregnancy Cravings Mean You're Missing Something?

You've probably heard that craving chocolate means you need magnesium or that wanting salty foods means your body needs more sodium.

But Mama, it's not quite that simple.

Although your nutritional needs change during pregnancy, specific food cravings aren't a reliable way to identify nutrient deficiencies. Craving ice cream doesn't automatically mean you're low in calcium, and wanting pickles doesn't necessarily mean you need extra salt.

Rather than trying to figure out what every craving means, focus on eating a variety of nourishing foods and following your healthcare provider's recommendations for prenatal vitamins.

Of course, eating a balanced diet isn't always as straightforward as it sounds, especially when pregnancy changes not only what you want to eat, but also what you can tolerate.

When Your Favorite Foods Suddenly Become Your Least Favorite

Sometimes, the biggest pregnancy surprise isn't what you're craving. It's what you suddenly can't stand!

Maybe eggs used to be your go-to breakfast, but now the smell alone makes you feel sick. Or perhaps your morning coffee doesn't have quite the same appeal.

Food aversions are common during pregnancy, particularly when nausea and changes in smell sensitivity are involved. And when your usual meals suddenly become unappealing, figuring out what to eat can feel like a challenge.

If you're dealing with food aversions, a few simple adjustments may help:

  • Try cold or room-temperature foods if strong cooking smells bother you.

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals when nausea makes larger meals difficult.

  • Experiment with different textures or preparation methods to find foods that are easier to tolerate.

  • Keep easy-to-tolerate snacks available for when your appetite returns.

Remember, you don't have to force yourself to eat foods that make you feel sick. However, if you're struggling to keep food or fluids down, experiencing signs of dehydration, or losing weight unintentionally, contact your healthcare provider.

While food aversions can make familiar meals less appealing, cravings can sometimes lead you toward combinations you never would have considered before.

Are Weird Pregnancy Cravings Normal?

For the most part, yes!

Some mamas crave sweet foods, others can't get enough of salty snacks, and some find themselves wanting combinations that sound completely unexpected.

And while your family or friends might question your latest snack creation, there's generally no reason to worry about an unusual food pairing as long as the ingredients are safe to eat during pregnancy.

However, there is an important difference between craving unusual food combinations and craving things that aren't food.

Craving non-food substances such as dirt, clay, chalk, or laundry starch may be a sign of pica, which can sometimes be associated with nutritional deficiencies, including low iron.

A persistent urge to chew ice can also be associated with iron deficiency.

If you experience these cravings, let your healthcare provider know so they can determine whether further evaluation is needed.

For everyday food cravings, though, the focus doesn't need to be on figuring out whether each combination is normal. It's about finding a balance that works for you.

Finding Balance With Pregnancy Cravings

Here's the thing, Mama. You don't need to feel guilty about enjoying something sweet, salty, or a little out of the ordinary.

Pregnancy is already a time of significant change, and food doesn't need to become another source of stress.

You can enjoy pregnancy-safe foods you're craving while still making room for the nutrients your body needs. Keeping nourishing snacks available, staying hydrated, and following pregnancy food-safety recommendations are all good places to start.

Remember to choose pasteurized dairy products and make sure meats are cooked to safe internal temperatures. If you have gestational diabetes or another condition that affects your dietary needs, follow the guidance provided by your healthcare team.

Most importantly, try not to put too much pressure on yourself to get every meal exactly right. One snack doesn't define your entire pregnancy diet.
